Altitude Sickness (AMS) Guide
Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) is a critical factor when traveling to Ladakh. Leh is situated at 3,500m (11,500 ft) above sea level. Proper acclimatization is not just recommended; it is essential for your safety and enjoyment.
Symptoms of AMS
- Headache (most common)
- Nausea or vomiting
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Fatigue or weakness
- Shortness of breath
- Loss of appetite
- Difficulty sleeping
Prevention & Acclimatization
The Golden Rule: Rest on Day 1
If you are flying into Leh, you MUST rest for the first 24 hours. Do not engage in any physical activity, not even a brisk walk. Let your body adjust to the lower oxygen levels.
Hydration
Drink plenty of water (3-4 liters a day). Avoid alcohol and smoking, as they exacerbate AMS symptoms and cause dehydration.
Medication (Diamox)
Consult your doctor about taking Acetazolamide (Diamox) before your trip. It helps speed up acclimatization. Usually, it is started 1-2 days before arriving in Leh.
